Golden Plaza Textile Market in Surat Faces Setbacks Amid Metro Construction, Traders Demand Administrative Support
Surat, May 17 – Golden Plaza Textile Market, located in the bustling Man Darwaza area on Ring Road, has long been regarded as one of Surat’s premier wholesale textile hubs. Housing 425 shops, the market caters not only to clients across India but also maintains a growing presence in international markets, thanks to its diverse range of textile products including suits, sarees, garments, and lehengas.
Managed by an organized committee, the market’s leadership includes President Vishwanath Khandelwal, Vice President Anil Gupta (CA), Secretary Dinesh Dwivedi, Joint Secretary Vinod Agarwal, Treasurer Madan Pujari, Deputy Treasurer Sunil Mawadiya, and Prakash Patel. Operational responsibilities have been overseen for years by Mahendra Pawar, ensuring consistent administrative coordination.
As per agency report, to safeguard both traders and customers, the entire premises is monitored through CCTV surveillance. The market is also equipped with dedicated parking facilities and essential amenities, making it a structured and efficient commercial environment. Vice President Anil Gupta shared that the market specializes in the wholesale trade of suits, sarees, lehengas, and garments. Additionally, it houses chartered accountant offices and professional service providers, which help streamline business operations for vendors.
Despite its reputation and well-established infrastructure, the market is currently experiencing a downturn. Secretary Dinesh Dwivedi noted that ongoing metro construction between Udhna Darwaza and Kamela Darwaza has led to a significant drop in business activity. This has directly impacted property values within the market. Previously, shop prices hovered around ₹35 lakh, but now even at ₹25 lakh, buyers are scarce. As a result, nearly 15 to 20 percent of the shops remain vacant.
Traders have also voiced concerns over what they describe as disproportionate civic taxation. While the Surat Municipal Corporation collects multiple levies—including property tax, conservancy charges, education cess, water charges, and more—traders allege that basic services and maintenance remain inadequate. This imbalance, they claim, has caused profit margins to shrink, adding to their operational burden.
Golden Plaza remains a vital node in Surat’s expansive textile industry. However, urban development pressures and administrative shortcomings are challenging its sustainability. Market stakeholders are urging local authorities to prioritize commercial interests and implement practical, timely solutions to protect and revitalize the economic fabric of this important trade center.
