Inmate Caught Smuggling Phones Inside Private Parts at Surat's Lajpore Central Jail, Triggers Major Security Investigation

A shocking breach of prison security has been reported at Lajpore Central Jail in Surat, where an inmate, facing serious charges of murder and robbery, was found to have concealed three mobile phones and a charger inside his private parts. The incident came to light during a routine security check as the prisoner was returning from medical treatment.

The inmate, identified as Jagtar Singh alias Sardar Manasingh Chamanlal Gadariya (Prisoner No. 2664), is held under sections 302, 394, and 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code. On May 14, he was brought back to jail from New Civil Hospital after receiving medical care. At around 6:25 PM, following his entry in the gate register, he was taken to the frisking room for a mandatory security screening.

During the check conducted with a hand-held metal detector (HHMD) by SRP staff, the device signaled suspicious metal presence near the inmate’s genital area. Based on the alert, the prisoner was immediately taken to the jail hospital. However, he attempted to harm himself, prompting authorities to rush him back to New Civil Hospital for a more thorough examination.

At 8:50 PM, a detailed inspection at the hospital revealed a tightly wrapped packet inside the inmate’s underwear. The packet, secured with heavy tape and carbon paper for concealment, contained three mobile phones and a charger. As per agency report, authorities suspect that the concealment was planned to bypass metal detectors and routine frisking procedures.

According to the official press release from the prosecution, the involvement of others cannot be ruled out. Investigators are looking into the possible collusion of jail staff, fellow inmates, or any external individuals the prisoner might have encountered during his hospital visit. The seized mobile phones have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for data extraction and analysis. Investigators aim to identify all possible contacts and communications through call records and stored data.

A new FIR has been registered against Jagtar Singh under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC-2023) and Sections 42, 43, and 45(12) of the Jail Act. Further interrogation is underway to uncover how the devices were smuggled and whether others were involved.

The case has raised serious questions about prison security and internal oversight mechanisms. Authorities are now under pressure to determine how such high-risk items made their way inside the highly monitored prison environment and whether insider assistance played a role. Further developments and potentially wider revelations are expected in the coming days as the investigation continues.
