Fire Breaks Out at Surat’s Avadh Ruturaj Market, No Casualties Reported

Surat, May 16, 2025 — A major fire broke out on the fifth floor of the Avadh Ruturaj Market located in the Parvat Patiya area of Surat on Friday morning, triggering panic across one of the city’s busiest textile hubs. The blaze engulfed approximately 10 shops in a short span, causing significant damage to property and merchandise.

The fire department swiftly responded to the emergency, dispatching 20 fire tenders from nine different fire stations. After nearly an hour of intense efforts, the flames were brought under control. One fire engine remains on standby at the site as a precautionary measure.

According to initial reports, the fire is believed to have originated from the cluster of shops numbered 3065 to 3075, occupied by Pinkesh Textiles. The presence of flammable materials such as textiles and sarees fueled the fire, allowing it to spread rapidly. Thick black smoke and visible flames rose high above the market, drawing attention from nearby areas.

Fortunately, the incident occurred during non-business hours when the shops were closed, and no casualties have been reported. However, traders have suffered considerable losses as valuable stock, including garments and electronic items, was reduced to ashes.

While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, early investigations point towards a possible electrical short circuit. The local police managed crowd control at the scene and ensured the safety of onlookers.

The administration has begun assessing the extent of financial damage. Repeated incidents of fire in Surat’s textile markets have once again raised serious concerns regarding the implementation and adequacy of fire safety protocols in commercial buildings across the city.
