Surat Uses Drones for the First Time to Combat Rising Mosquito Menace
Surat – Faced with a sharp increase in mosquito-related complaints over the past month, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched an advanced mosquito control drive using drone technology for the first time. The initiative aims to tackle the growing mosquito menace, particularly in hard-to-reach areas where manual spraying of insecticides is not feasible.
The campaign began in the Randher zone, specifically in the Bhensaan area, where drones were deployed to spray insecticides in waterlogged locations, dense bushes, and inaccessible terrains. As per agency report, this effort marks the first use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI-ML) based drone technology in Gujarat for mosquito control.
Despite ongoing measures such as dry day drives and routine surveys, complaints of mosquito outbreaks continued to rise in parts of the Randher zone. In response, SMC launched this special initiative targeting the elimination of mosquito larvae within 7 to 10 days, aiming to curb the spread of diseases like dengue, malaria, and filariasis.
The municipal corporation plans to expand this high-tech approach to other affected areas across the city in the coming days. Officials believe that the widespread use of drones will not only provide relief to residents but also play a crucial role in controlling mosquito populations, especially during the upcoming monsoon season.
