Supreme Court Dismisses Tushar Gandhi’s Plea Against Sabarmati Ashram Redevelopment Project
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, challenging the redevelopment project of the historic Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad. The bench, comprising Justices M. M. Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal, noted that the plea had been filed with a delay of over two years and declined to intervene in the matter.
Tushar Gandhi had approached the apex court against a 2022 order by the Gujarat High Court, arguing that the proposed redevelopment would alter the layout and sanctity of the original ashram premises. As per agency report, his petition highlighted concerns that while the project claimed to preserve over 40 identified structures, nearly 200 other buildings would either be demolished or reconstructed, significantly changing the site's character.
The Gujarat High Court had disposed of the matter earlier after the state government assured that the core area of the ashram would remain unaffected. Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Gandhi Ashram, was established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 and is considered one of the most important landmarks of India’s freedom movement.
