Mandatory Helmet Rule from February 15 in Surat: Strict Penalties for Violators

Surat, February 14 – The Surat traffic police will strictly enforce the mandatory helmet rule for two-wheeler riders starting today. As per government directives, traffic police have been instructed to take stringent action against violators to reduce the rising number of road accidents. The initiative aims to prevent severe injuries and fatalities caused due to riding without helmets.

To raise awareness about the new rule, the Traffic Police, in collaboration with various trade organizations, conducted a helmet awareness campaign in recent days. On February 13, the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) distributed 1,350 helmets among traders and workers to promote road safety.

Helmet Sales Surge Amid New Rule

Following the announcement of the helmet mandate, helmet sales in Surat have witnessed a sharp rise. Both local and certified helmets have seen increased demand. According to Anandbhai, owner of Gear Up Store in Vesu, the number of customers seeking helmets has skyrocketed from 1-2 per day to 50-100 daily.

However, a concerning trend has emerged—most buyers are opting for cheaper, uncertified helmets instead of BIS and ISI-certified ones, prioritizing cost over safety. Anandbhai cautions that non-certified helmets offer minimal protection in accidents, defeating the purpose of the safety initiative.

Helmet for Safety or Just to Avoid Fines?

The surge in helmet purchases raises an important question—are people buying helmets for safety or merely to avoid fines? Conversations with helmet vendors and buyers suggest that a significant number of people are purchasing helmets solely to evade police penalties, rather than prioritizing their personal safety.

Gen-Z Prefers Stylish Helmets

While millennials tend to prefer simple black helmets, Gen-Z is showing a preference for stylish and designer helmets. Helmets featuring vibrant colors, graphic prints, and modern designs have gained popularity. Anandbhai notes that younger buyers are looking for helmets that offer both protection and a fashionable look.

With the helmet rule now in effect, the real challenge remains—ensuring that riders wear helmets for their safety rather than just as a legal formality.
