Trump Signs First Law Allowing Pre-Trial Detention of Illegal Immigrants in the U.S.
Washington, January 30 – U.S. President Donald Trump has signed his first legislation, allowing the pre-trial detention of illegal immigrants charged with crimes such as theft, burglary, robbery, assaulting a police officer, and homicide.
The ‘Laken Riley Act’ received bipartisan support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, making it the first bill signed into law since Trump assumed office on January 20.
What the New Law Entails
Trump stated, "Under this law, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will have the authority to detain all illegal immigrants arrested for crimes related to theft, burglary, robbery, assaulting police officers, murder, or causing serious injuries."
This legislation is named after 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, who was tragically murdered by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. Trump hailed the act as a historic step towards strengthening border security and law enforcement.
Opposition from Democratic Leaders
However, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin has criticized the law, arguing that it weakens federal powers and goes against constitutional immigration policies.
Voting Breakdown in Congress
- Senate: Passed with 64 votes in favor and 35 against.
- House of Representatives: Approved by 263 votes in favor and 156 against.
This law marks a significant shift in U.S. immigration enforcement, reflecting Trump's hardline stance on illegal immigration and public safety.
