PM Modi Launches 'Water Conservation Public Participation Initiative' in Surat
A nationwide effort to enhance water conservation through community involvement.
Surat – Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Water Conservation Public Participation Initiative' in Gujarat's Surat on Friday through video conferencing. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to promote large-scale water conservation with the active involvement of communities across the state.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized the importance of water conservation, particularly in the wake of recent heavy rains that have caused widespread destruction across various parts of India. He remarked, "This year, Gujarat faced a significant crisis. Despite all our efforts, the fury of nature was overwhelming. However, it is the inherent strength of the people of Gujarat and the country that we come together in times of adversity to support one another."
The Prime Minister stressed that water conservation is not merely a policy but a collective responsibility and a noble cause. "When future generations evaluate us, our attitude toward water will likely be their primary measure. It is not just a matter of resource management; it concerns the very future of humanity," he stated. Water conservation is the first of nine key commitments toward a sustainable future, according to the Prime Minister.
PM Modi also highlighted that water and nature conservation are deeply rooted in Indian culture. "For us, water is not just a resource; it is revered as a deity. Rivers are considered goddesses, and lakes and ponds are seen as sacred. Water conservation is not just a policy matter but a social responsibility," he said, adding that public awareness, participation, and mass movements are the greatest strengths of this initiative.
The program will see the construction of approximately 24,800 rainwater harvesting structures across the state through community participation. These structures are designed to enhance rainwater collection and ensure long-term water sustainability in Gujarat.
