Surat : Heavy Rains Flood Sania Hemad, Villagers Demand Action
Annual flooding in Surat's Sania Hemad village raises concerns over drainage and illegal constructions.
Heavy rains over the last three days have wreaked havoc in Surat district, with Sania Hemad village suffering the brunt of the downpour. The village, located on the outskirts of Surat, has once again turned into an island, with rainwater inundating the local temple at the entrance.
Residents are facing severe disruptions as flooding affects their daily lives. Similar issues have been reported in the nearby villages of Kumbharia and Chalthan, where bay areas have also been submerged.
Villagers have expressed frustration over the recurring issue, alleging that the administration fails to take appropriate action each year. "There's no proper drainage system," one villager lamented. "Illegal constructions have narrowed the waterways, causing the flooding."
Local authorities have responded to these concerns. Limbayat Zonal Officer of Surat Municipal Corporation stated, "Relief and rescue operations are ongoing in the flood-affected areas. We are also working on improving the drainage system and will take action against illegal constructions."
Despite these assurances, the villagers remain skeptical and continue to demand immediate and effective solutions to prevent future flooding.
