Progress of society can be measured by sensitivity towards Divyangjan: President

New Delhi, June 20 (HS): President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said that the progress of a country or society can be measured by the sensitivity shown by the people of that country or society towards Divyangjan.

The President today visited Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Physically Disabled Persons in New Delhi, where she spent time with Divyang children and students and witnessed the cultural programme presented by them. She also visited the renovated Prosthesis and Orthosis Centre and interacted with the patients.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said that sensitivity and inclusiveness have been an integral part of our culture and civilization. She said that no physical condition can become a barrier to leading a normal life when our efforts are inclusive and sensitive towards the needs of Divyangjan. She was happy to note that Divyangjan are scaling new heights in every field with their skills and talent. She also praised sportspersons like Deepa Malik, Arunima Sinha and Avni Lekhara and sportspersons like K.S. Citing the example of social workers like Rajanna, he said that all such people are examples of the fact that with dedication and determination, one can overcome all kinds of physical limitations.

The President was happy to know that Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities has been working for the empowerment of persons with disabilities for the last several decades. He appreciated all those associated with the Institute for working towards the socio-economic empowerment of the disabled.
