Surat, India - The city of Surat is gearing up to host the country's largest-ever Saree Walkathon on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at 6:30 am at the Police Parade Ground. Organized by the Surat Municipality and Surat Smart City Development Limited, the event aims to raise awareness about fitness among women and encourage them to lead healthier lives.
Celebrating India's Unique Textile Heritage
As the textile hub of India, Surat is renowned for its saree weaving and diverse cloth production. The Saree Walkathon will showcase the unique identity of Indian women and the country's pride in its cultural heritage. Participants from different states will don sarees representing the Fit India, Make in India campaigns, and India's rich culture.
Planning and Participation
A meeting was held on Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Performing Art Center under the leadership of the Municipal Commissioner. Representatives from various organizations, including the Indian Medical Association, Indian Institute of Architect, Institute of Chartered Accountant, Diamond and Textile Association, and Education Institute, attended to discuss event planning.
The commissioner urged all attendees to contribute to the planning process to ensure maximum participation from women across provinces and age groups. Delegates enthusiastically supported the initiative, offering suggestions and opinions on organizing the event.
Growing Interest and Handloom Exhibition
Over 10,000 registrations have already been recorded for the Surat
Saree Walkathon, and the number is expected to grow, making it the largest event of its kind in India. In response to the overwhelming interest from citizens, the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has organized a Handloom Exhibition. The exhibition will take place from April 9 to April 11, 2023, at the Umra Party Plot in the evenings.

Venue: Police Parade Ground, Eighth Line Route: 3 km (Participants will take a U-turn from Police Parade Ground, proceed under Parle Point Bridge, and return to Police Parade Ground) Registration: To participate in the Surat Saree Walkathon, individuals must register through the Surat Municipal Corporation's website at www.suratmunicipal.gov.in.
