Accused Escapes from Surat Police Station During Health Emergency
Incident at Godadara Police Station Raises Questions on Security Measures
Surat: In a bizarre turn of events, an accused thief escaped from the lock-up at Godadara police station in Surat city after being temporarily let out to help another inmate experiencing a health crisis. At the time of the incident, only two policemen were present in the station.
ASI Ajitbhai Kanusing Chowdhary, who works at Godadara police station, lodged a complaint following the escape. According to the complaint, the accused, Vijay alias Bobdo Ambalal Wadi (20) and Kishan Jayanti Wadi (25), were arrested from Lajpore sub-jail and brought to Godadara police station on a court transfer warrant.
After interrogation, both were placed in the lock-up at the police station. Kishan Jayanti, a tuberculosis patient, informed the Investigating Officer of his poor health, which subsequently took a turn for the worse, causing him to faint due to convulsions. Police opened the lock-up door and enlisted the help of the other accused, Vijay, to move Kishan to a safer spot under a fan.
As ASI Ajitbhai contacted the Investigating Officer to discuss taking the accused to the hospital, Vijay seized the opportunity to escape from the open lock-up. Ajitbhai pursued the accused for 300 meters but was unable to apprehend him. The incident has raised concerns about security measures in place at the police station.
