Deadly Boat Capsize in Mozambique: Over 90 Feared Dead

Harare, Zimbabwe - April 8 : A tragedy unfolded off the coast of Mozambique on Sunday, as a makeshift ferry carrying over 130 people capsized, leaving more than 90 dead, including many children. The incident occurred near Lunga, in Nampula province, as the vessel was traveling to Mozambique Island.

Local news outlet TV Diario Nampula reported that the overloaded boat, typically used for fishing, was carrying passengers for various reasons. Some were headed to a local fair, while others were reportedly fleeing rumors of a cholera outbreak.

Nampula province's secretary, Jaime Neto, attributed the mass exodus to panic caused by misinformation. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but hopes of finding survivors are diminishing. This devastating accident highlights the dangers of overloaded and unsuitable vessels, particularly when coupled with mass panic.
