Surat : Businessman Falls Victim to Honeytrap Scam on Social Media

The 38-year-old businessman, a resident of Rander Road and owner of a shop, had advertised his business phone number on social media. This number was allegedly used by a gang to target him in an elaborate scam.

The Trap:

The businessman received repeated calls regarding temple construction, eventually leading him to meet a woman at his residence to take measurements. However, the situation took a sinister turn when the woman lured him into the bedroom, disrobed, and accused him of running a brothel when he attempted to leave.

Fake Police and Extortion:

Three accomplices posing as police officers then entered the room, threatening to arrest him and demanding a settlement of Rs 17 lakh to avoid charges. Fearing further trouble, the businessman complied.

Justice Served:

However, when the gang demanded more money, the businessman bravely approached the police. The Surat Crime Branch launched an investigation and apprehended the honeytrap gang in Navsari. Four individuals, Ramesh Navadiya (42), Rahul Kathiriya (42), Maya Saeeda (31), and Ketan Bhadani (34), were arrested. The police recovered Rs 5.69 lakh cash, mobile phones, fake police ID cards, and other incriminating evidence. The total seized assets amounted to Rs 11.18 lakh.

A Lesson Learned:

This incident serves as a stark reminder to be cautious when sharing personal information online. It's crucial to be wary of unsolicited contacts and avoid making hasty decisions under pressure. If faced with threats or blackmail, immediately report the matter to the authorities. Additionally, police officers never demand money from civilians and are always identifiable by their uniforms and ID cards. When advertising on social media, ensure strong privacy settings and control who can access your contact details.
