Surat Generates Revenue by Selling Treated Wastewater to Industries

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has become a frontrunner in sustainable water management by generating revenue from selling treated wastewater to industries. Over the past three years, SMC has earned ₹340 crore through this innovative project.

Treating Wastewater for Industrial Use

SMC has constructed three treatment plants with a combined capacity of 115 million liters per day (MLD) in Bamroli, Dindoli, and Sachin. These plants treat wastewater to an industrial grade level, making it suitable for various industrial processes. Notably, the construction cost of these plants (₹345 crore) has already been recovered through the sale of treated water.

Dual Benefit: Saving Water and Protecting the Environment

By supplying treated wastewater to industries, SMC achieves two crucial goals. Firstly, it reduces the reliance on freshwater sources for industrial purposes, thereby preserving precious drinking water. Secondly, by treating wastewater before releasing it back into the environment, SMC helps minimize pollution and protects the ecosystem.

Expanding the Project

The success of the initial project has prompted SMC to explore further possibilities. Plans are underway to expand the Dindoli plant to cater to industries in Palsana. Additionally, SMC is considering selling secondary treated wastewater, a less refined form suitable for specific industrial uses, to further increase revenue and environmental benefits.

SMC's innovative wastewater treatment project serves as a model for sustainable water management. By generating revenue while saving water and protecting the environment, this initiative paves the way for a more responsible future.
