Sheikh Shahjahan Sent to 4-Day CBI Custody in Sandeshkhali Attack Case

Kolkata, March 10: Sheikh Shahjahan, the prime accused in the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, has been sent to CBI custody for four days.

Shahjahan was produced in the Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court on Sunday by the CBI, which requested further interrogation and his remand in custody. Shahjahan's lawyer argued his innocence, claiming he had no role in the attack. However, the CBI presented call records allegedly showing Shahjahan making calls around the time of the ED raid, which they believe led to a mob gathering and subsequent assault on the officers.

Citing Shahjahan's influence, the CBI argued that granting him bail could lead to evidence tampering. The court, after hearing both sides, ordered Shahjahan's transfer to CBI custody for four days.

ED officials were allegedly attacked by a mob in Sandeshkhali on January 5th during a raid on Shahjahan's residence connected to a ration distribution scam investigation. Police arrested Shahjahan only 55 days later, on February 29th. Following Calcutta High Court's intervention, West Bengal Police handed over the case and Shahjahan's custody to the CBI last week.
