Woman Set on Fire by Boyfriend Dies in Surat

A heart-wrenching incident unfolded on the night of Sunday, February 18, 2024, in the Katargam area of Surat city. A woman, identified as 50-year-old Radha Gatu Jarpada, was set on fire by her boyfriend while she slept, resulting in her tragic demise. The incident sheds light on the fatal consequences of jealousy and domestic disputes.

Radha, who lived with her son and daughter on a footpath near Lalita Chowk in Katargam, was reportedly in a relationship with a man named Shambhu, who also resided on the footpath with them. Shambhu, who was referred to as "Shambhu Kaka" by Radha's children, allegedly poured petrol on Radha as she slept and set her ablaze around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday night.

The horrific act was witnessed by Radha's children and nearby residents, who rushed to her aid. She was immediately taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries at 6:30 a.m. that morning. According to Manisha, Radha's daughter, Shambhu had suspected her mother of talking to someone else, leading to the tragic incident.

After setting Radha on fire, Shambhu fled the scene and sought refuge in a nearby Mahadev temple. However, police were able to apprehend him shortly thereafter. A case of murder has been registered against Shambhu, with investigations ongoing.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police LB Jhala, there had been a relationship between Radha and Shambhu for eight years. However, a recent altercation occurred two days prior, sparked by Shambhu's suspicions of Radha's fidelity. It is believed that Shambhu committed the heinous act in a fit of rage, highlighting the destructive consequences of jealousy and unchecked emotions in relationships.
