Gujarat : Congress Faces Another Blow as Senior Leader Resigns Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

Gandhinagar - The Congress party in Gujarat has been dealt a significant blow as senior leader and Vijapur MLA CJ Chavda submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker Shankarbhai Chaudhary on Friday morning, marking the second major setback ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Chavda's departure comes on the heels of Khambhat MLA Chirag Patel's resignation on December 19, further diminishing the Congress representation in the assembly to 15 MLAs. Speculation is rife that Chavda is poised to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), intensifying the political dynamics in the state.

The resignation trend extends beyond the Congress, as Aam Aadmi Party MLA Bhupat Bhayani had stepped down from the Visavadar seat in Junagadh district on December 13. With Chavda's exit, three opposition MLAs have resigned in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly.

Known as a formidable leader within the Gujarat Congress, Chavda had been at the forefront of the party's activities in the assembly. His resignation comes as a surprise, especially considering his victory over senior BJP leader Raman Patel in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections by a margin of 7053 votes.

The political landscape in Gujarat is witnessing a significant churn, setting the stage for a dynamic electoral battle in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress party now faces the challenge of regaining momentum and shoring up its strength in the state.
