Ahmedabad : In a shocking case of medical negligence, 17 people lost their eyesight after undergoing cataract surgery at a trust-run hospital in Mandal village, Ahmedabad district. Taking swift action, the Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and issued notices to the state Health Secretary and the Rural Superintendent of Police.
Eyes on Mandal Hospital:
On January 10, 29 patients underwent cataract surgery at the Ramanand Trust Hospital in Mandal. However, disaster struck shortly after, with 17 individuals reporting complete vision loss following the procedure. Five of these patients were rushed to Asarwa Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad for further treatment, while the remaining 12 continue to receive care at the Mandal hospital.

Advocate Hardik Brahmbhatt filed a petition before a joint bench of Justices AS Supehia and Vimal Vyas, drawing the High Court's attention to the incident. Responding promptly, the court issued notices to the concerned authorities and demanded a preliminary investigation report, scheduled for presentation on February 7.
