Gujarat's "Karuna Abhiyan": Chief Minister Visits Wildlife Care Center in Bid to Save Birds During Uttarayan
As Uttarayan, the vibrant kite-flying festival, approaches, Gujarat has launched a state-wide campaign called "Karuna Abhiyan" (Compassion Campaign) to protect and treat birds injured by kite strings. In support of this initiative, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently visited the Wildlife Care Center in Bodakdev, Ahmedabad, on Saturday, January 13th.
Inspecting the Facilities:
During his visit, the Chief Minister inspected the center's operation theatre, OPD, and X-ray room, gaining firsthand insight into the vital work being done to save injured birds. He also took the time to appreciate a wildlife photography exhibition showcasing the beauty and diversity of Gujarat's avian population.
A Collaborative Effort:
Gujarat's Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, Nityanand Srivastava, emphasized the collaborative nature of the Karuna Abhiyan. He highlighted the involvement of various stakeholders, including the Animal Husbandry Department, Forest Department, Municipal Corporations, and numerous voluntary organizations, all working together to ensure the campaign's success.
A Multi-Pronged Approach:
The Karuna Abhiyan operates with meticulous planning and a multi-pronged approach. Control rooms staffed by the Forest Department have been set up in all tehsils across the state, functioning daily from 7 am to 6 pm. Additionally, a dedicated WhatsApp number (8320002000) and website have been established for quick reporting and information regarding injured birds. Helpline numbers for both the Forest Department (1926) and the Animal Husbandry Department (1962) are also available to assist the public.
A Network of Support:
To ensure efficient and widespread care for injured birds, Gujarat has mobilized an impressive network of resources. Over 900 bird diagnosis-treatment centers, more than 700 veterinarians, and over 7700 dedicated volunteers are spread across the state, ready to provide immediate and necessary assistance.
A Celebration of Compassion:
The Karuna Abhiyan stands as a testament to Gujarat's commitment to animal welfare and compassion. This unique initiative, undertaken during a festive period, underscores the state's respect for all living creatures and its dedication to protecting them. Last year's campaign successfully rescued a total of 13,008 birds, demonstrating the positive impact of collaborative efforts aimed at safeguarding lives.
As Uttarayan draws near, Gujarat's unwavering dedication to wildlife continues to inspire. The Karuna Abhiyan serves as a beacon of hope for countless feathered creatures, ensuring that they can soar through the vibrant skies, unharmed and celebrated.
