Surat Sweeps Cleanliness Award, Breaking Years of Second Place Streak
City Sheds "Kingdom of Filth" Label, Achieving Top Spot in National Survey
Surat, once marred by the nickname "Kingdom of Filth," has finally shed its past, claiming the coveted title of India's cleanest city in the 2023 Cleanliness Survey. After three consecutive years as runner-up, the jubilant city erupted in celebration upon the announcement, marking a resounding triumph for years of dedicated effort.
The journey to first place was paved with unwavering determination. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), spurred by a campaign for national cleanliness dominance, mobilized residents, sanitation workers, and NGOs in a concerted push towards urban transformation. Micro-cleaning campaigns spearheaded by officials and civilians alike swept through the streets, leaving no corner untouched.
"Even the smallest employees" contributed to this collective effort, as emphasized by Mayor Dakshesh Mavani. His pride was palpable as he accepted the award alongside Municipal Commissioner Shalini Aggarwal, attributing the victory to the tireless teamwork that permeated every level of the campaign.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's influence on the city's journey was also acknowledged. His emphasis on cleanliness, both during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and through personal initiatives like the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" (Clean India Mission), was seen as a driving force. As Gujarat BJP state president C.R. Patil aptly stated, Modi's "order to clean the entire Surat" a week prior to his Diamond Burse inauguration served as a final push towards excellence.
The celebration in Surat echoed beyond the confines of Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, where the awards ceremony took place. ICCC's giant LED screen wall streamed the event live, allowing the entire city to share in the momentous occasion. As the announcement resonated through the speakers, officials erupted in joyous cheers, feeding each other sweets in a spontaneous display of elation.
This milestone victory signifies a remarkable transformation for Surat. From battling infamy to becoming a national cleanliness champion, the city has set a shining example for urban sanitation efforts across India. However, the Mayor's humble appeal serves as a crucial reminder – the true test lies in maintaining this hard-earned ranking. With continued dedication and collaborative spirit, Surat's journey towards sustained cleanliness promises to be as inspiring as its ascent to the top.
