Apeejay School International presents grand musical challenging gender stereotypes

Apeejay School International (ASI), Panchsheel Park, New Delhi, recently presented a grand musical - Once Upon a Mattress. High on creativity and production values, the school presented a whimsical transformation of the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea. The enchanting rendition was a comedic romp, weaving together humour, love, and unexpected twists.

However, it was the purposeful tweaking of an accepted narrative to question gender stereotypes that elevated the production to a thought provoking piece of entertainment.

Filled with lively musical numbers and witty dialogue, "Once Upon a Mattress" explores themes of love, acceptance, and the importance of breaking free from societal expectations. The play celebrates individuality and challenges the traditional fairy tale narrative with humour and charm.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Mr. Nishant Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya and Svran Group, and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Nisha Berlia. Mrs. Vandana Swaika, wife of Dr. Adarsh Swaika, Ambassador of the Embassy of India, Kuwait, graced the occasion with her presence. A host of other dignitaries were also present as also members from Apeejay Education’s other schools and other esteemed office bearers. Also present in large numbers were the members of the parent community.

Speaking before the presentation, Mr Purshottam Dutt Vashist, Principal, ASI said “The musical is set to redefine the social narrative of women. Challenging patriarchal norms and several gender-related expectations often tied to the fairer sex, the musical strives to give women voice and agency. Our students have worked hard and are eager to showcase their magic on the stage.”

The show proved to be a visual and auditory feast for the senses. The commitment to the arts at ASI was palpable. In fact, ASI has a rich tradition of hosting annual plays that showcase the nurtured talents of the students. The meticulously crafted sets and props reflected the attention to details. The precision in choreography and harmony in musical renditions all elevated the production to a high-quality theatrical experience.
