Clashes Erupt During Surat's Zero Encroachment Drive as Vendors Resist Removals
Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) campaign to clear encroachments on the city's "zero encroachment roads" has met with resistance from vendors, leading to clashes over the past few days. The latest incident occurred last evening near Super Cinema Road in Parvat village, where vegetable and fruit vendors clashed with SMC officials attempting to remove their stalls and lorries.
Tensions Rise on Zero Pressure Route:
The designated "zero encroachment road" was intended to remain clear of obstructions to ensure smooth traffic flow. However, vendors had set up shop along the route, causing congestion. As part of the pressure relief operation, SMC teams arrived at the scene yesterday to remove the vendors.
Heated Exchange Turns Physical:
Initially, the operation proceeded peacefully, with vendors given time to move their goods. However, the situation turned volatile when officials began impounding the vendors' lorries. A few individuals resisted the seizure, sparking a heated exchange that escalated into a physical altercation.
Police Intervene, Complaint Filed:
The SMC team promptly informed the Godadara police, who intervened to defuse the situation. Limbayat Zone Officer N.Z. Ganeshwala stated that despite repeated explanations and attempts to reason with the protestors, legal action became necessary. A complaint has been filed against the two individuals involved in the clash.
Drive Continues Despite Resistance:
The incident highlights the challenges faced by the SMC in implementing its zero encroachment policy. While officials remain committed to clearing the designated roads, they emphasize the need for cooperation from vendors and residents to ensure smooth implementation. Ganeshwala confirmed that similar encroachments in other areas of Limbayat zone are being targeted and removed.
Moving Forward:
The clashes between vendors and SMC officials raise concerns about the need for a balanced approach to addressing both traffic flow and the livelihoods of street vendors. Finding a sustainable solution that accommodates both parties will be crucial for the long-term success of Surat's zero encroachment initiative.
