Surat Police Crack Down on Drunk Driving and New Year's Eve Revelry with Drones and Breathalyzers

SURAT - Determined to ensure a safe and responsible New Year's Eve celebration, Surat City Police launched a comprehensive crackdown on drunk driving and public revelry. Their efforts bore fruit, with hundreds of people arrested for alcohol-related offenses and a notable drop in dangerous driving incidents.

Drones Take to the Skies, Breathalyzers Hit the Streets

This year's strategy saw a two-pronged approach:

  • Drone surveillance: Police deployed drones to monitor rooftops and farmhouses, known hotspots for illegal parties, effectively spotting gatherings violating alcohol regulations.
  • Widespread breathalyzer tests: Officers equipped with breathalyzer machines were stationed across the city, conducting random checks and testing anyone suspected of driving under the influence.

Zero Tolerance for Drunk Driving:

The results were clear:

  • 260 people arrested: Police apprehended a total of 260 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol. The highest number of arrests, 92, occurred in the Pandesara area.
  • 35 drunk driving cases: Traffic police registered 35 cases of drunk driving using speed guns and breathalyzers.
  • Focus on party areas: Areas like Adajan, Athwa, Umra, Sachin GIDC, and Khatodara, known for New Year's Eve parties, were under tight scrutiny.

Beyond Alcohol: Targeting Drug Use

Recognizing the growing concern of drug use at parties, the police employed special drug analyzer kits. Over 200 such kits were utilized in various locations, enabling officers to identify and apprehend individuals under the influence of drugs.

City Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar stated, "There is a growing trend of alcohol and drug consumption during New Year's celebrations. This year, we were determined to ensure the safety of our citizens by taking strict measures against irresponsible behavior."

Safer Streets, Responsible Revelry

The combined efforts of drone surveillance, breathalyzer checks, and drug detection resulted in a significant reduction in drunk driving incidents and ensured a more controlled and responsible New Year's Eve celebration. This proactive approach by the Surat City Police serves as a model for other cities looking to maintain order and safety during festive occasions.

While celebrations are vital, it's crucial to remember that responsible behavior paves the way for a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone. By actively discouraging drunk driving and illegal activities, the Surat City Police have set a commendable example of prioritizing public safety during times of festivity.
