Rajkot : Gondal Market Yard Flooded with Onions, Prices Plummet Amid Export Ban
Rajkot – Saurashtra's busiest onion market, the Gondal Marketing Yard, witnessed a record influx of 1.5 lakh bags on Monday. The surge, which began late Sunday night, resulted in a 4-kilometer queue of onion-laden vehicles snaking around the yard on both sides. Despite the bumper arrival, however, farmer joy remained elusive, as onion prices sank to Rs 150 per 20 kg due to the ongoing government ban on onion exports.
This dramatic drop marks a sharp decline from Friday's auction price of Rs 450 per 20 kg. Following earlier protests by disgruntled farmers, the yard had resumed auctions only recently. The current price slump translates to a Rs 100-150 loss per 20 kg for onion growers, casting a pall over the festive season.
Calls for Lifting Export Ban or Minimum Support Price Intervention
The situation has generated widespread concern within the onion market. From the chairman of the Gondal Marketing Yard to commission agents, there's a fervent call for the government to reconsider the export ban. They are urging authorities to at least allow onion exports to Nepal and Bangladesh, offering farmers access to alternative markets and potentially boosting prices.
Traders are also pushing for immediate intervention from NAFED, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India. They believe prompt NAFED procurement at the minimum support price of Rs 1268 per quintal would provide much-needed relief to farmers struggling with low market prices.
Uncertainty Looms as Onion Season Peaks
The bumper arrival of onions coincides with the peak season for the crop, further exacerbating the market glut and price crash. With the export ban remaining in place and NAFED intervention pending, uncertainty hangs heavy over the fate of Gondal's onion farmers. This dilemma highlights the challenges faced by Indian agriculture, where volatile market forces and government policies can drastically impact the livelihoods of those who till the land.
The Gondal Market Yard saga serves as a stark reminder of the complex interplay between production, demand, and policy decisions in the agricultural sector. As onion season reaches its peak, finding a solution that ensures fair prices for farmers and market stability remains a critical imperative for both policy makers and industry stakeholders.
