Ahmedabad, India: Farmers in Gujarat have completed nearly all Rabi crop sowing, fueled by last year's record prices and optimistic market prospects. With 40.77 lakh hectares already planted, Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel anticipates another profitable season for the state's agricultural sector.
Cumin Reigns Supreme: Gujarat's dominance in cumin production is undisputed, and this year is no different. Following exceptional prices in 2022, cumin sowing has witnessed a staggering 202.58% increase, jumping from 2.61 lakh hectares to a remarkable 5.30 lakh hectares. This surge underlines the crop's current appeal among farmers.
Wheat Leads the Grain Pack: Among cereals, wheat takes the crown, with a total sown area of 10.73 lakh hectares. Pulses saw farmers favor gram, covering 5.64 lakh hectares, while mustard emerged as the top oilseed choice, occupying 2.64 lakh hectares.
Saurashtra Leads the Way: Saurashtra zone leads the charge with 16.03 lakh hectares of Rabi crops sown, followed by Kutch and North Gujarat (13.70 lakh hectares), Central Gujarat (7.94 lakh hectares), and South Gujarat (3.10 lakh hectares).
Minister Expresses Optimism: Minister Patel expressed satisfaction with the sowing progress and overall crop condition. He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting farmers and facilitating a successful Rabi season.
