Gujarat Farmers Gain Insights on Camel Conservation and Entrepreneurship During Educational Tour

Bikaner, 4 December - In a bid to foster awareness and explore entrepreneurial opportunities in camel-related ventures, a group of 50 farmers from Gujarat embarked on an educational tour at the National Camel Research Center (NRCC). The initiative, organized under the Center for Agriculture Extension and Farmers Development (CAFED), aimed to enlighten farmers about the unique qualities of camels and the potential for camel-based products in the market.

Dr. Artabandhu Sahu, the Director of the NRCC, emphasized the institute's commitment to the conservation and promotion of camel species. Beyond traditional uses, the center is actively engaged in research on various aspects of camels, including the production of camel milk. Dr. Sahu underscored the potential for entrepreneurship in eco-tourism, envisioning a positive impact on the socio-economic conditions of camel herders.

During the tour, Dr. Sahu provided detailed information about the physical characteristics of camels. He highlighted the medicinal properties of camel milk, citing its benefits in human diseases such as diabetes, tuberculosis, and autism. Emphasizing the allergy-free nature of camel milk, he encouraged farmers to explore business and marketing opportunities. Gujarat, being a pioneer in camel milk initiatives through Amul, has witnessed minimal decline in camel numbers compared to other states.

The visiting farmers from Gujarat expressed their curiosity about various aspects of camels, including water-holding capacity, hump characteristics, and products made from camel milk. NRCC scientists addressed these inquiries scientifically, fostering a deeper understanding.

Dr. Amol Gonge, the group's in-charge, commended NRCC's efforts in camel conservation and development. Acknowledging the ongoing relevance of camels in national security, the farmers appreciated the practical initiatives undertaken by the center. Dr. Shantanu Rakshit, a scientist at NRCC, guided the farmers through the camel museum, enclosures, and dairy farm, providing crucial insights at the field level of camel husbandry.
