Reckless Driver Hits 5 Pedestrians, Including 3 Children, in Surat
Accused Arrested After Fleeing Scene
SURAT - A reckless car driver hit five pedestrians, including three children, in the Limbayat area of Surat on Monday night. The accused, Rupesh Dattubhai Polekar, fled the scene after the accident, but was later arrested by police after they identified him from CCTV footage.
The incident occurred at around 9:00 PM when Polekar, who was driving an eco car, ran over five people who were walking on the service road. The victims included a woman and her child, another man, and two little girls.
One of the victims suffered a fractured leg, while the other four sustained minor injuries. The woman's child was admitted to the hospital for treatment.
"The driver hit five people and ran away," said PI V.A. Jograna of Limbayat police station. "Out of which one person has suffered a fracture in his leg, while his daughter has been admitted to the hospital due to body injuries. While the remaining two children and the woman suffered minor injuries."
Police immediately launched an investigation and were able to identify Polekar from CCTV footage. They then deployed teams to trace him and eventually arrested him.
During interrogation, Polekar, who works as a supervisor in a private company, admitted to causing the accident. He has been charged with rash driving and causing grievous hurt.
"We have arrested Dattu Polekar, seized the car and are investigating further," said PI Jograna.
