Surat Municipal Corporation to Impose Strict Penalty for Littering Starting April 1
Those who spit and litter in public places in Surat city will face a strict penalty from April 1, as the Municipal Corporation aims to make the city number one in cleanliness. The corporation has recovered a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh from 18,000 people who have spat and littered in public areas so far. The corporation is now planning to take strict action against those who spit in public and throw garbage in public places.
The Municipal Corporation has installed 2600 cameras in the city to keep a close watch on those who spread dirt and spit at different places. The corporation is also planning to install around 700 more cameras in the near future. People are being fined with the help of cameras. By sending videos of such people to the zone level, the health department has collected a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh from such people.
The biggest nuisance in the city is the filth of spit after eating pan masala on the flyover bridge built on the river. The polluting vehicle will be identified on the basis of the registration number of the vehicles in coordination with the RTO and a fine of Rs 500 will be charged.
Mayor Hemaliben Boghwala said that under the Swachh Bharat, Swachh Surat campaign, this initiative has been taken to create awareness among the citizens about cleanliness and also to maintain the cleanliness of the public places of the city. For taking action against people spitting in public and defecating in the open, fines have been issued through CCTV cameras installed in the city in coordination with the Municipal Corporation and the police.
