Surat : Dr. Prashant Kariya Highlights the Importance of Mental Health Awareness in Adolescents
Expert Emphasizes Early Intervention and Support for Depressed Youth in Seminar
In a recent seminar organized by the Yuva Mitra Foundation, the importance of addressing mental health issues in adolescents took center stage. Pediatrician Dr. Prashant Kariya, a prominent speaker at the event, shed light on the challenges young people face during the crucial stage of puberty and the need for attentive care and support.
Dr. Kariya began by emphasizing the significance of the prefrontal cortex, a vital part of the brain responsible for decision-making, which is still developing during adolescence. He noted that this developmental phase can lead to significant physical and mental changes, making it essential for parents and caregivers to be vigilant.
During the seminar, Dr. Kariya discussed various factors that can contribute to adolescent depression. He highlighted the detrimental impact of excessive screen time, particularly when parents try to limit it, leading to heightened aggression in some cases. Additionally, the effects of social media on self-esteem were discussed, including the potential harm caused by cyberbullying and image manipulation.
Disturbingly, Dr. Kariya pointed out that by the age of 14, there is a 50 percent chance of adolescents developing a mental illness. However, he also stressed that timely intervention and counseling can significantly mitigate these risks.
The seminar concluded with a strong call to action: recognizing the signs of depression in adolescents and referring them to mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists or counselors, can play a crucial role in helping them overcome the challenges they face. In an age where mental health issues among youth are on the rise, the message was clear - listening to and supporting depressed children can make all the difference in their well-being and future prospects.
