Surat's E-Vehicle Charging Stations Face Maintenance and Utilization Challenges

SURAT: Despite Surat Municipal Corporation's progressive steps towards an eco-friendly future with the introduction of an e-vehicle policy and the establishment of e-vehicle charging stations, a stark disparity in charging costs and poor maintenance have led to underutilization of these stations.

The surge in petrol, diesel, and gas prices has certainly prompted an increase in the number of e-vehicles in Surat, particularly after the municipal corporation announced incentive policies for electric vehicle owners. To cater to the growing demand, the corporation commissioned the construction of e-vehicle charging stations. However, numerous complaints regarding their slow operation and maintenance have surfaced.

A notable example is the charging station outside Gopi Lake in Navsari Bazaar. Despite the significant investment in its establishment, the lack of maintenance personnel has turned this charging facility into a playground for local children, presenting a potential safety hazard. There are concerns that children could accidentally come into contact with live wires, risking fatal accidents.

Similarly, a charging station in the Palanpur area has become a resting spot for stray dogs. Such conditions have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the stations and their maintenance standards.

Given the sizable investments being made by the municipality in building these stations, there's a growing demand for improved maintenance and operational efficiency, ensuring that these facilities are both safe and beneficial for the public. Properly maintained and functional charging stations can indeed incentivize more residents to transition to e-vehicles, aligning with Surat's eco-friendly vision.
