Tragic Drowning in Surat Leads to Multiple Arrests
Child's death highlights safety concerns over unauthorized Ganesh immersion pits.
SURAT - The community is reeling after the tragic drowning of five-year-old Satyam Chauhan, who lost his life in an unauthorized pit filled with water, intended for Ganesh immersion. The incident has led Dindoli police to apprehend two individuals involved, and a case of culpable homicide has been registered against three persons.
Satyam, a resident of Dindoli Srinathnagar, went missing last Friday after venturing out to play. His body was later discovered in the 10-foot deep pit. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ajay Subhash Kahar of plot number 331 in the locality had unauthorizedly dug the pit in the common area of the society. Subodh Krishna Sharma of plot number 231 and another individual used the pit for the immersion of their Ganpati idols.
The pit, left uncovered and filled with water post the immersion ceremony, posed a significant hazard, leading to the unfortunate accident. Satyam's uncle, Ramdhari Ramchandra Bind (Chauhan), lodged a complaint, prompting the police to act swiftly. While Ajay Kahar, the man behind the pit's creation, was previously detained, Subodh Krishna Sharma, 52, originally from Nalanda, Bihar, and identified as a rickshaw puller, was arrested recently for his involvement in the immersion process.
The incident serves as a grave reminder of the need for stringent safety measures and proper authorizations for community activities.
