Surat's Bicycle Sharing Initiative : Despite Investing Crores, the Ambitious Project Sees Decline and Neglect
In a bid to establish itself as a top-tier city, Surat consistently announces ambitious projects, aiming to outpace other cities in Gujarat and across India. However, its track record in the practical execution of these projects has been less than stellar, often placing it at the bottom of national rankings.
The recent bicycle-sharing initiative launched by the Surat Municipal Corporation has come under scrutiny. The project, which initially enjoyed success in select areas, has seemingly been sidelined. Commencing with an impressive 1,200 bicycles and approximately 250 cycle stands across various zones, the project's current state paints a bleak picture. Many stands have either been damaged or disappeared, with some locations showcasing empty stands and others displaying bicycles without the requisite stands.
This decline has been accompanied by the repurposing of some bicycle stands. In certain areas, these stands are being utilized as makeshift business stalls or even sleeping quarters.
Despite the municipal body investing significant funds into this initiative, many of the bicycles are now relegated to storage near Lal Darwaza. Exposed to the elements, particularly the monsoon rains, the bicycles have deteriorated beyond repair, transforming into mere scrap.
Dinesh Kachhariya, a former councilor, commented on the state of the project, noting its initial success and subsequent decline. He emphasized the need for effective monitoring and maintenance of such initiatives. However, the question of accountability remains unanswered, with ambiguity surrounding which top official should be held responsible for the potential wastage of crores.
This situation serves as a stark reminder that without proper oversight, even well-intentioned projects can falter, leaving residents to question the commitment and efficiency of their local administration.
