Child Drowns in Pit Dug for Ganesh Immersion in Surat's Shrinathnagar Society
Two Residents Charged with Culpable Homicide After Failing to Refill Excavated Pit
Surat - A tragic incident unfolded on Friday in Shrinathnagar Society, Dindoli, Surat, when a 5-year-old boy, Satyam, drowned in a 10-foot-deep pit. The pit had been dug by society residents, specifically for the immersion of Ganesh idols during the recent festival.
Satyam, the youngest of three siblings, belonged to a humble family. His father, Rajeshbhai Chauhan, worked as a watchman to support his wife and children. Upon realizing Satyam's absence, his mother began a frantic search, only to discover her son's lifeless body in the pit.
Two residents of Shrinathnagar Society, Ajay Subhash Kahar and Subodh Krishna Sharma, had excavated the pit using a JCB for the Ganesh immersion ceremony. Post-immersion, the pit was left unfilled, leading to the unfortunate event.
Inspector R.J. Chudasma of the Dindoli Police Station stated, "The child's family alleges that if the organizers had filled the pit promptly after the immersion, this tragedy could have been averted." In light of the incident, charges of culpable homicide under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code have been lodged against Kahar and Sharma. Police are currently in pursuit of the two accused.
In a concerning twist, someone from the society had previously alerted the police control room about the potential danger of the open pit. The caller was advised to lodge a formal complaint at the police station. Unfortunately, the action wasn't swift enough to prevent young Satyam's tragic fate.
