Gujarat Government Announces Rehabilitation Assistance for Narmada Flood Victims

Gandhinagar, 30 September - In a much-awaited response to the recent Narmada flood calamity, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has introduced the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burdens of those affected in the commerce, trading, and service sectors in flood-stricken regions of Bharuch, Vadodara, and Narmada districts.

The disastrous floods resulted from heavy rainfall during September, affecting the Narmada River/Dam and the Orsang River, causing significant damage to the mentioned sectors. The scheme's primary goal is to provide monetary assistance for rapid rehabilitation and help reboot businesses in these affected areas.

The Chief Minister's newly announced program will cater to 40 villages and two cities in Bharuch district, 31 villages in Vadodara, and 32 villages in Narmada district. A notable feature of the scheme is the provision of direct cash assistance to small vendors and shopkeepers, facilitating the revival of their businesses. Additionally, bank loans will be accessible to larger traders and businesses, supported by financial institutions.

Key Provisions of the Rehabilitation Assistance Scheme:

  1. Street vendors will receive a lump sum cash assistance of Rs 5,000.
  2. Small permanent cabin holders (up to 40 sq. ft.) can avail a one-time cash aid of Rs 20,000.
  3. Larger cabin holders (more than 40 sq. ft.) will be eligible for a one-time assistance of Rs 40,000.
  4. Permanent shops with a monthly turnover of up to Rs 5 lakh (as per GST return) will get a one-time cash aid of Rs 85,000.
  5. Larger shops with a monthly turnover exceeding Rs 5 lakh will benefit from an interest subvention up to Rs 20 lakh at a 7% rate for three years, with total assistance capped at Rs 5 lakh.

For aid distribution, surveys, photography, and videography will serve as documentation evidence. Eligible recipients must apply to the designated Mamlatdar or Chief Officer of the Municipality by 31st October 2023. A dedicated committee chaired by the provincial officer will approve the assistance. Affected individuals eligible for interest subvention should apply to the District Industrial Center with proof of loan receipt. If any disputes arise regarding assistance allocation, the affected unit can appeal to a committee headed by the Collector.
