In a bid to ensure a seamless and eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebration, the Surat Municipal Corporation has embarked on an ambitious project to construct 20 artificial ponds across nine zones in the city. Spearheading the initiative, newly appointed Mayor Dakshesh Mavani, accompanied by other eminent officials, visited one of the construction sites to inspect the progress and ensure that everything is going as per the plan.
Proactive Measures
Setting a precedent for proactive governance, the Municipal Corporation aims to facilitate the traditional Ganesh immersion process with a modern and environmentally conscious touch. These artificial ponds are in various stages of construction, situated strategically across the different zones of the city to accommodate the large number of devotees expected to participate in the immersion ceremony.
Mayor Mavani, alongside standing committee chairman Rajan Patel, deputy mayor Dr. Narendra Patil, ruling party leader Shashiben Tripathi, and magistrate Dharmesh Vaniyawala, was seen inspecting the ongoing construction at the Dakka Owara site located in the heart of Chowkbazar, Surat.
Sustainable Immersions
In a statement to the press, Mayor Mavani elaborated on the project, stating that the artificial ponds are being prepared to accommodate idols up to five feet in height, whether they are made from POP or clay. This move is geared to prevent any inconvenience to the people during the immersions, guaranteeing that the ghats are well-equipped to handle the grand festivities.
Around 60 to 65 thousand statues are anticipated to be installed this year, demonstrating the massive scale of the celebration. For the larger idols exceeding five feet in height, a separate arrangement is underway at Hazira beach to facilitate a smooth immersion process. Moreover, residents are encouraged to conduct immersions of smaller clay idols at their homes, promoting a safer and more sustainable practice.
