Ahmedabad : Gang busted for extorting money by asking for likes on social media videos and images
Ahmedabad Cybercrime has arrested five individuals for their involvement in a scheme to earn money through fraudulent means on social media. The gang, originally from Rajasthan, would extort money from people under the guise of charges for liking videos and images. The police were alerted to their activities after receiving a complaint and have since arrested the five accused, including the main mastermind of the operation, Rajkumar Yadav.
The gang's modus operandi involved sending a link through WhatsApp offering a freelance job. Once the link was opened, individuals would see an advertisement about earning money and were directed to add the gang to their affiliated groups and like different tasks. However, when the police interrogated the accused, it was revealed that various charges and GST of the authorized company were being paid into an account for liking the videos. Victims were then asked to deposit money in bank accounts with the lure of earning more money.
The police have seized more than three lakh worth of goods, including nine mobile phones and keys to different bank accounts, and are trying to remand the accused to inquire about who else is connected with this fraud business that has been going on for some time. The police urge people to be careful when paying money to like videos or images on social media, and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
