Rajkot : Private Schools Implement Dress Code for Parents
New Policy Aims to Promote a Disciplined and Dignified Atmosphere: Entry Denied for Non-Compliance
Rajkot, India — In a move aimed at fostering discipline and decorum within educational settings, private schools in Rajkot have implemented a dress code, not just for students, but also for parents. The policy prohibits parents from entering the school premises wearing informal attire such as nightgowns, caps, shorts, or capris.
Maintaining Dignity and Discipline
The decision was taken by the School Management Board to create a more disciplined and dignified atmosphere within the schools, as well as to instill good habits in children. According to the Board of Governors, many parents had been arriving in casual or night attire to drop off their children in the mornings or to attend parent-teacher meetings.
"We are taking a serious view of such habits. Any parent coming to the school dressed inappropriately will be stopped at the gate and entry will not be permitted," said a representative from the School Management Board.
A Temple of Learning
Administrators reiterate that schools are not just learning centers but temples of education that should be treated with respect and decorum. "Children acquire discipline and manners from the school environment. Parental behavior, including how they dress, also impacts children," they stated.
They argue that just as one would wear decent clothes when visiting someone's home or going out, the same standard should be maintained in an educational institution.
Wider Implementation in the Offing
The Rajkot Self-reliant School Management Board discussed the necessity of such a dress code in a recent meeting, leading to speculation that the rule might be implemented across all schools in Rajkot in the near future. The Board will provide guidelines to parents, who are expected to adhere to the new policy.
While the move is generally welcomed for promoting an atmosphere of dignity and respect, it also raises questions about personal freedoms and whether a school’s jurisdiction should extend to how parents dress. Nonetheless, the policy represents an attempt by educational institutions in Rajkot to align the conduct of all stakeholders—students, teachers, and now parents—with the schools' mission and values.
