Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to Revamp 508 Stations Nationwide, 21 in Gujarat
In a significant move to bolster the infrastructure and socio-economic development of Gujarat, Indian Railways has allocated an unprecedented budget of Rs 8,332 crores for the financial year 2023-24. This budget marks a whopping 1315 percent increase over the average funds allocated between 2009 and 2014.
A Focus on Passenger Convenience
Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to transform railway stations into modern, asset-driven service centers, Indian Railways is giving priority to passenger convenience. The initiative falls under a new policy known as the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at continuously improving railway stations by enhancing infrastructure, amenities, and services.
Nationwide Reach of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
Under the newly launched Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 1,309 stations across the country are slated for redevelopment. Of these, 120 are under the jurisdiction of Western Railway. Specifically, 87 stations are in Gujarat, 16 in Maharashtra, 15 in Madhya Pradesh, and 2 in Rajasthan.
A Cost-Effective Redevelopment Plan
On August 6, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 stations across the nation, 21 of which are in Gujarat. The state’s stations will see a transformation at a total estimated cost of Rs 846 crores.
List of 21 Stations Undergoing Redevelopment:

Blueprint for Future Stations
A comprehensive master plan is in place to transform these stations into ‘City Centers,’ seamlessly integrated into the urban landscape. These stations will be cultural landmarks reflecting India's diversity and will be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and upgraded existing facilities. The station buildings' designs will draw inspiration from local culture, heritage, and architecture.
Modern Amenities for All
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to provide a variety of modern amenities such as improved lighting, air concourses, executive lounges, and food courts. It will also enhance accessibility with better-designed traffic circulation, upgraded parking spaces, and facilities geared toward disabled individuals and senior citizens. Eco-friendly building features utilizing green energy are also included in the scheme.
The redevelopment projects under this ambitious scheme are expected to revolutionize the travel experience for passengers, pilgrims, and tourists alike, while also driving tourism and creating new employment opportunities in the state.
