Surgeons at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Successfully Remove LED Bulb from Infant's Lung
A Nine-Month-Old from Madhya Pradesh Undergoes Critical Surgery, Prompting a Warning for Parents to Monitor Children's Activities
Ahmedabad – In an incident that has sent a ripple of concern among parents, a nine-month-old infant from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, swallowed an LED bulb while playing with a toy mobile phone. The child was brought to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment, where surgeons successfully removed the foreign object from his lung.
The incident initially led to breathing difficulties for the child. Local doctors in Ratlam performed an X-ray, revealing a foreign object lodged in the right lung. Due to the complexities involved in the extraction, the child was referred to pediatric surgeons. Acting on a recommendation from a friend living in Ahmedabad, the child's parents decided to move him to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for specialized treatment.
Upon arrival, the Department of Pediatric Surgery conducted a second X-ray, confirming the presence of a pin-sized foreign body. To accurately diagnose the situation, doctors performed binocular examination of the child's lungs. The first attempt to remove the object was unsuccessful due to excessive swelling and bleeding. However, four days later, a second attempt was successful in extracting the LED bulb.
The surgery was carried out by a team led by Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, and Dr. Kalpesh. Post-surgery, the child returned to Madhya Pradesh with his family, completely healthy and in high spirits.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale for parents to closely monitor their children's activities, especially given that similar cases have been reported at the hospital. Parents are urged to be vigilant about what their children are playing with to prevent such life-threatening occurrences in the future.
