Brain Dead Patient's Family Donates Kidneys, Contributing to the Hospital's Remarkable String of 137 Organ Donations in the Last 10 Months
In a life-affirming gesture, Surat's New Civil Hospital team facilitated its 41st successful organ donation today. The donation of two kidneys from brain-dead Shankarbhai Rupla Mali will grant new life to two individuals.
Shankarbhai Ruplabhai Mali, 52, a resident of Sukun Row-house in the Allpad Taluka of Surat District, experienced a sudden pain on the night of August 18, 2023. Admitted to Sion Hospital, he was later transferred to New Civil Hospital in an unconscious state where the severity of his condition was determined. Neuro Physician Dr. Paresh Janzmera, Neuro Surgeon Dr. Keyur Prajapati, and RMOs Dr. Ketan Nayak and Dr. Nilesh Kachadia declared him brain dead on August 21.
Understanding the importance of organ donation, Dr. Nilesh Kachadia, Iqbal Kadiwala, and Counselor Nirmala Kathud engaged with the Mali family, who demonstrated remarkable courage by agreeing to donate the organs, even in their time of grief. Both kidneys were accepted by Ahmedabad's IKD.
Braindead Shankarbhai Mali hailed originally from Kalamsare, Dhule, Maharashtra, and is survived by his wife Premilaben and sons Virendra and Mukeshbhai.
Under the guidance of Dr. Ganesh Govekar, Medical Superintendent, the dedicated efforts of the doctors and staff of Civil Hospital and Navi Civil Hospital have resulted in 41 successful organ donations over the past 10 months. The tally includes 74 kidneys, 32 livers, 3 hearts, 1 pancreas, 4 intestines, 7 hands, 14 eyes, and a total of 137 organs donated.
The remarkable success in organ donation stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the civil medical and nursing staff, security staff, and conscious volunteers. It's a beacon of hope, highlighting the potential to save lives and a growing awareness of organ donation within the community.
