Gujarat Municipal By-Elections: BJP Dominates with 20 Seats; Congress Secures 8
BJP Marks Historic Win in Mundra for the First Time Since Independence
Ahmedabad, Gujarat - In the recently concluded by-elections for 29 seats across 18 municipalities, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant victory with 20 seats, while the Congress trailed with 8. An independent candidate clinched the remaining seat.
Detailed outcomes revealed the BJP's widespread successes:
- BJP claimed victories in various municipalities including Bareja (Ahmedabad district), Talala (Gir Somnath District), Mundra-Baroi (Kutch District, marking a historic win as it was the first time since independence), Thasara (Kheda District), Unjha Town (Mehsana District), Rajpipla (Narmada district), Godhra (Panchmahal district), four seats in Siddhpur (Patan district), Porbandar-Chhaya (Porbandar district), and Dhrangadhra (Surendranagar district).
- In Bhavnagar district, the BJP captured one seat in Mahuva and two in Palitana, with Congress taking the remaining three.
- Amod Municipality in Bharuch district saw the BJP take four of the five seats, with an independent candidate winning the last seat.
On the other hand, the Congress marked its wins in:
- Deesa and Palanpur (Banaskantha district), Anand (Anand Municipality), Modasa (Aravalli district), and Jambusar (Bharuch district).
Reacting to the outcomes, BJP general secretary Rajni Patel stated, "The election results clearly showcase the trust and affection people of Gujarat continue to hold for the BJP." He took special note of the Mundra seat victory, mentioning its historic significance.
Congress state president Shakti Singh Gohil commented on the party's performance, highlighting that they managed to increase their seat count from five to nine. Despite the loss, he praised the efforts of his party members in the Surat city Municipal Corporation election, noting a commendable vote percentage.
The by-elections have yet again thrown light on the political dynamics of Gujarat, with the BJP establishing its dominant stance.
