Surat Police Crack Down on Moped Stunt Drivers
Citizen-led reporting aids in the identification and pursuit of reckless moped drivers.
Surat - The Surat Traffic Police, aided by vigilant citizens, are taking stern action against youths performing dangerous stunts on mopeds. A video showing four young individuals executing risky maneuvers on a busy road was sent to the police's WhatsApp helpline. The video prompted an immediate investigation, resulting in charges being filed against the moped driver.
The Surat City Traffic Police, in an effort to engage the community in ensuring safer roads, had launched a traffic helpline WhatsApp number (7984530537). It was through this channel that a concerned resident shared the video, showcasing four youths performing hands-free stunts on a moped amidst dense traffic, posing significant danger to themselves and others.
Upon further investigation, the incident was pinpointed to the Athawalines police station area. The moped involved, identified as a blue-colored vehicle with registration GJ 05 LX 1917, became the focal point of the investigation. Charges were promptly filed under section 279, 336 of the IPC, and sections 177 & 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act at the Athwalines police station.
PI D.G. Rabari from the Athwalines Police Station commented, "Despite being occupied with by-election duties, we've deployed specialized teams to apprehend the individuals involved." Utilizing the vehicle's registration details from the RTO, they are optimistic about a swift arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.
This crackdown on daredevilry follows recent incidents in Ahmedabad. The police are now proactively registering complaints against such offenders. In a notable development, a complaint was recently filed by a traffic police officer at the 8th Lines police station in Surat against stunt drivers, reflecting the force's commitment to ensuring road safety.
