Surat : Rare American Sugarmouth Catfish Discovered in Mindhola River
Local Fisherman Astonished: Amazon-native Species Found Far from Home in Surat District
In an unexpected catch, a fisherman from Manekpore village in the Palsana taluk of Surat district stumbled upon an exotic fish while casting his net in the Mindhola river. Initially puzzled by the find, he reached out to the president of the Friends of Animal Welfare Trust in Bardoli, only to discover that the fish was a catfish species native to the Amazon River in America.
The rare appearance of the American Sugarmouth Catfish drew large crowds, eager to glimpse the four-legged aquatic creature, renowned for its unique capability to survive without water for up to 24 hours. The specimen caught boasted a length of over three feet.
Given the environmental concerns associated with the catfish – notably its penchant for consuming other fish, turtles, and aquatic organisms in large water bodies – the species has been outlawed for fishing in Karnataka. With its potentially harmful ecological impact in mind, the detained catfish will be transferred to the Palsana Forest Department, where officials will decide on the next steps based on higher authority guidelines.
