Surat : Sustainable Textiles Pushed for Special Incentives in Upcoming Gujarat Textile Policy

Surat, August 1, 2023: Chamber President, Rameshbhai Vaghasia, and Honorary Treasurer, Kiranbhai Thummar, convened with Industries Commissioner Sandeep Sagale in Gandhinagar today to discuss incentives for "Sustainable Textiles" in the forthcoming textile policy of Gujarat.

A significant focus of the meeting was the long-pending interest and electricity subsidies, which many textile units in Gujarat have been waiting for. A special circular was issued by the Gujarat Government in February 2022, amending clause no. 8.10 of the Textiles Policy 2019. This revised guideline addressed the benefits of other government policies applicable to industrial activities covered under the Textiles Policy 2019. However, due to ambiguities in interpretation, there were hurdles faced by textile units from 2019 to October 2022. Rameshbhai Vaghasia emphasized that these units should be allowed to apply for benefits under other policies and be granted the corresponding incentives.

With the Textile Policy 2019 set to expire on December 31, 2023, and the government planning to unveil a new policy under "Vibrant Gujarat," the Chamber President presented a series of suggestions to Commissioner Sagale. At the heart of these recommendations was the appeal for special incentives for sustainable textiles. Vaghasia stressed on capital subsidies, especially for adopting green energy and circular economy practices. He also advocated for industries engaged in producing recyclable yarn to be offered higher profits compared to other units.

Responding positively to the proposals, Commissioner Sagale requested a compiled list of textile units awaiting pending subsidies under the 2019 policy. He committed to scrutinizing the list and ensuring appropriate action is taken promptly. Expressing interest in gaining firsthand insights, Sagale disclosed his plans to tour Surat's industrial zone along with his team, aiming to better understand the region's textile landscape and requirements.
