Gujarat : Statewide Crackdown on Traffic Violators Following Fatal Accident

Ahmedabad : Following the tragic accident on the ISKCON bridge that resulted in the death of 9 individuals, police forces across Gujarat are ramping up enforcement measures against traffic rule violations.

In response to the accident, the Director General of Police (DGP) has directed district officers statewide to tackle individuals engaging in reckless behaviors, such as performing stunts on city streets and highways. Additionally, a strong emphasis is placed on curbing overspeeding and other traffic violations.

The recent numbers reflect the police's renewed commitment. Since the start of the traffic drive on 22nd July, 1869 cases have been registered under traffic rule violations within just two days. Surat city alone reported 710 instances of overspeeding and 51 cases of drunken driving.

Similarly, Ahmedabad, still reeling from the ISKCON bridge accident, has put in commendable efforts to spread awareness and enforce the law. Between July 22nd and 24th, Ahmedabad police registered a total of 192 cases. These included 57 for overspeeding, 16 for drunken driving, and 119 for dangerous driving. In a notable incident, police took action against two individuals in Maninagar who were involved in an accident while driving under the influence.

Other cities like Anand and Vadodara are also seeing a spike in violations, with 245 cases of speeding and 09 cases of drunken driving in Anand, and 45 cases of overspeeding in Vadodara.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the DGP has ordered all commissioners and SPs to run a state-wide special traffic campaign for the upcoming month. This intensive drive will target overspeeding, stunt drivers, and regular traffic violators. Alongside these efforts, the authorities will enforce strict compliance with traffic rules, ensuring that citizens adhere to regulations concerning licenses, helmets, signals, and correct driving lanes.
