Surat Municipal By-election Date Set; Sagrampura-Majura-Sagrampura Ward Heads to the Polls on August 6

In the wake of the death of Councilor Jayesh Jariwala of Surat Municipal Corporation's Ward No. 20 on May 22, 2022, the State Election Commission has announced a by-election to fill the vacant council seat. The vote, set to take place in the Sagrampura-Majura-Sagrampura ward on August 6, 2023, follows the election commission's issuance of an official notification.

The last municipal elections, held in 2021, saw the election of 120 councilors across 30 wards to the Surat Municipal Corporation. However, the untimely death of BJP Councilor Jayesh Jariwala led to Ward No. 20, which includes Khatodara-Majura-Sagrampura, being represented by just three councilors, leaving one seat vacant.

The election commission released the official notification today following a revision of the voter list. The notification for the by-election will be published on July 17. Prospective candidates will have until July 22 to submit their nomination forms, with the last date for withdrawal set for July 25.

The polling for the by-election is scheduled for August 6, 2023, with the vote count taking place on August 8. The announcement of the by-election has reignited the political fervor in Surat city as parties and candidates prepare for the forthcoming vote.
