Surat Witnesses Vegetable Heists Amid Soaring Prices

Thefts of Potatoes and Tomatoes Reported in Surat, Police Turn to CCTV for Clues

Surat Witnesses Vegetable Heists Amid Soaring Prices

SURAT - Unprecedented thefts of tomatoes and potatoes have left the local community in Surat rattled, as the skyrocketing prices of these essential vegetables turn them into unexpected targets for thieves. Recently, an audacious theft of over 150 kg of tomatoes from the Kapodra vegetable market has been captured on CCTV.

The incident came to light amid a spike in tomato prices, which have crossed Rs 200 per kg. The video surveillance footage is now central to the police investigation into the theft. However, this is not an isolated occurrence.

Just three days earlier, a case of potato theft was reported from Surat's Varachha area. The police logged the incident when 17 sacks of potatoes vanished from Bade Varachha. Both these incidents reflect an unusual crime trend, as thieves increasingly set their sights on the city's valuable vegetable stocks.

In yet another incident, a complaint was lodged at the Kapodra police station, reporting theft of tomatoes, brinjal, and garlic from a vegetable market near Akshar Diamond in Kapodra. The victim, a local merchant, reported the crime after discovering three sacks of tomatoes missing when he arrived for business in the morning.

As the city grapples with these unusual thefts, the local law enforcement has been thrust into a new role, from tackling traditional crimes to hunting down the city's 'vegetable thieves.' For now, the Kapodra police are taking the lead in the investigation of these unusual crimes.
