Surat Police Crack Down on Bicycle Theft Ring: Luxury Cycle Network Busted
Surat's Special Operations Group Apprehends Three Suspects, Recovers Stolen Property Worth Over Two and a Half Lakhs
In a significant breakthrough, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Surat Police has dismantled a bicycle theft network, arresting three individuals suspected of stealing sports and luxury bicycles across the city. The arrests have led to the recovery of 42 bicycles, a rickshaw, and a significant amount of cash, totaling over two and a half lakhs. The successful operation has helped solve five criminal cases so far.
The arrested suspects were caught on CCTV pilfering bicycles from affluent neighborhoods, schools, tuition centers, and shopping malls, later selling them at lower prices. The accused, who were nabbed while roaming the city in an auto-rickshaw, confessed to stealing bicycles from various areas, including Rander, Utran, Amroli, Adajan, Singanpore, and Jahangirpura.
Rajdeep Singh Nakum, DCP of SOG, shared insights into the operation. "In recent times, fitness-conscious individuals and sports enthusiasts have shown a growing preference for bicycles, often investing in models ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. The suspects targeted these high-end bicycles, stealing them when the owners inadvertently left them unlocked," Nakum said.
The DCP highlighted the ease of bicycle theft compared to vehicle theft, given that bicycles do not require registration. This lack of traceability, coupled with a low rate of theft reporting, has made bicycle theft a relatively low-risk, high-reward activity for criminals.
The breakthrough came when SOG constables Hasmukhbhai Mohanbhai and Rajubhai Bhimabhai received a tip-off about a person returning to the Amroli area after stealing bicycles from across the city. In a swift response, the SOG team laid a trap near the Amroli Kosad residence and apprehended the suspects, identified as Sania Sudarshan Sawai, Panchubhai Sudarshan Subuddhi, and Gautam alias Ram Amulya Pradhan, all natives of Ganjam district, Odisha. The operation underscores the Surat Police's commitment to maintaining law and order in the city, irrespective of the scale or nature of the crime.
