As torrential rains lashed the city of Surat, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, the local fire department launched a swift rescue operation to save a family trapped in a waterlogged vehicle in the Nanavat area.
The early morning downpour resulted in the family's car getting stuck in 1.5 to 2 feet of water as they were leaving home to travel to another city. Unable to start the vehicle after repeated attempts, the occupants, comprising a couple and their three children, contacted the fire department for assistance around 5 am.
Chief Fire Officer Basant Parikh detailed the successful rescue operation. He noted that the fire control unit received the distress call early in the morning, indicating that a family was stranded in their car due to flooding in the Nanavat area. Prioritizing the safety of the trapped occupants, the fire department team arrived at the site within just five to seven minutes.
The team ensured the safe extraction of the family before the water level could rise any further. Following the rescue of all individuals, the fire department team also managed to remove the vehicle from the water when the water surface level had receded.
Parikh highlighted that special instructions have been issued to officers in each zone to maintain heightened alertness during the monsoon season, prepared to respond to such emergencies in the wake of the recent extreme weather.
